KAMPALA DARK DAY TOUR

Kampala is the capital city of Uganda, and it harbours a dark past. From pre-colonial martyrs, to post independence dictators, Kampala has played host to many a brutal and depraved act. There are torture chambers, tombs and execution sites, all within the city confines.

Our Kampala Dark Day Tour will take you through the history of the city over the past 150 years. Our first stop is the Protestant Shrine at Namugongo. Namugongo was historically an execution site, and it is here that 13 Catholics and 13 Protestants were tortured and burnt to death for refusing to renounce their faith.

We then head to the Catholic Shrine, 1.5 km down the road. Here, one Catholic martyr was burnt to death, and a fragment of his spine sits in the alter of the church. 22 Catholics were killed in total, and they have been canonised. The Pope visited both shrines in 2015.

Next, our tour takes you to the Royal tombs at Wamala, where Kabaka Ssuuna of the Buganda kingdom is buried. His descendants still live on the grounds, and tend to the graves. We then head to Idi Amin’s torture chambers in Mengo, which was built in the grounds of Lubiri Palace. Our tour takes you inside the underground bunkers, where the blood of Amin’s many victims still stain the walls.

Next, we go to the city centre, where our final stop is the Serena Hotel, a five star luxury hotel, which was formerly the Nile Mansions Hotel, and was used by both Idi Amin and Miltion Obote to detain and torture people.

On Our Kampala Dark Day Tour, our guide will tell you the story behind each site, and give an account of the larger historical context within which these events took place.
